Mad for Marimekko? The iconic Unikko Poppy print just radiates happiness. In post-war-torn Helsinki the founders of Marimekko began designing bold, graphically dynamic, and expressive prints that were radically ahead of their time, totally breaking with tradition, in a mission to uplift daily life through design. Before they turned to home fabrics, the fabrics were made into simple shift dresses in order to highlight the prints. In 1960, Jackie Kennedy appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated (!) wearing a Marimekko shift she purchased at the edgy Design Research Store in Cambridge Mass. Unikko, still in print today, was originally designed in 1964, at the beginning of the hippie-floral era, and still has a slightly retro yet timeless appeal. A retro black gingham check in taffeta keeps the design fun, as does the boho black pom trim, highlighting the centers of the bright poppies.
